Let’s have an easy one to take a little break from the rarity.
The Topshop Tartan Skort is easy to come by for very little money. It can be found in all sizes all over Depop and eBay and they go as low as £3, so if you’re starting out as a new Clara cosplayer, that is definitely one of the affordable starting pieces.
It comes in the Topshop tall and petite range. I own the petite size and I can confirm that, yes, it’s only for short people. If you’re not familiar with the term “skort” (as I wasn’t when I started collecting), it’s basically a mix between a skirt and shorts. It has legs but looks like a layered skirt at first glance. If you own the petite version or are generally a taller Clara, I would recommend wearing tights with it like Clara does.
The skort runs small, but I suppose that it depends on your body shape as well as your size. I am a UK8/10 in bottoms and I bought this skort in a UK10. Thanks to my hourglass shape it fits me like a second skin. However, I had the skort brought over from the UK by a friend who is technically the same size, but she couldn’t zip it up. When I tried to put it on my dress form, which is a UK8, I couldn’t close the zip of the skort all the way up either because even though the form doesn’t have a butt, my waist is slightly smaller than that of the dress form. So if you’re in doubt, it’s better to size up. At least you’ll be comfortable and if it really doesn’t fit, a different size will be available on Depop or eBay for a low price.
I wore the skort to work on multiple occasions and I always got a lot of compliments on it because it really is a cute and unique item that is easy to come by. My only regret is that it doesn’t have pockets. It’s made from 68% polyester and 32% viscose and I assume that during the really hot days, the skort can become a bit sweaty and uncomfortable, but it’s really cute when worn with tights, so you can always wear it on cooler days.
Clara doesn’t only wear this outfit in Robot of Sherwood, it is also briefly seen in The Caretaker when the Doctor and Clara are being chased and shot at by soldiers.
