Here it comes, the Holy Grail of Clara cosplay items: the green Topshop Check-Lined Mac. Sadly, I only own the black/navy version of it and there are some days I even doubt the green one exists, but I still want to talk about how much I love it.

On the rarity scale, this item is probably at the top. I know of a few cosplayers who own it, but out of the many Clara cosplayers I follow on Instagram, that really isn’t a lot. During my time as a Clara cosplayer, this item has been up for sale on eBay only once and as far as I know, it sold for over £500 (I refused to check back after a few days because the numbers made me cry). If you’re one of the lucky few who own it: I ENVY YOU BECAUSE GREEN IS MY FAVOURITE COLOUR AND I NEED IT! But I haven’t given up hope yet. One day, it will be mine.

However, there is a black/navy alt available. Even though I own it, I’m really not sure what colour it is. It is supposed to be navy, but it looks more like a faded black in my eyes. The alt is a lot more affordable than the green version and even though it’s still rare, it does pop up on eBay eventually. I’ve seen it sell for between £30 and £90. My first mac was somewhere in between, but I’m not afraid to admit that I paid £5 for my second on a German website. So if you get really lucky, you can find this one cheap as well if no one else finds it first.

The sizing of this is really all over the place. Because it’s supposed to look oversized, you can probably fit in a variety of sizes. As a UK6-8 in jackets, I first owned a UK10 and it looked fine on me. It was roomy enough for me to wear a big jumper under it. I now own a UK6 and it doesn’t look that different on me, but since the shoulders fit me a little better, I decided to keep that one. So if you find a size remotely close to what you usually wear, you will be fine.

The mac instantly became one of my favourite jackets to wear simply because of the roomy pockets. I can comfortably carry a 1.5l water bottle around in one of the pockets without it falling out (show me another jacket that can do that!). I once went downstairs during my break carrying my phone, money, my sunglasses in their case, my breakfast and my water bottle in those pockets. So for that reason alone, it’s one hell of a practical jacket. The popper buttons make it very easy to close the jacket without getting your clothes jammed in a zip and it keeps you warm enough on spring and autumn days, however, it’s a little too light to serve as a jacket through the winter (unless you live somewhere really warm). Also, it might keep off a light rain, but the mac is anything but waterproof. It will not get you through a downpour, but the jacket with its hood will keep some light rain off your upper body and head. It is made from 100% cotton.

Even outside of cosplay, my mac already got enough wear to justify the many hours I spent searching for it. I know that the green one is the dream of every Clara cosplayer, but you should also consider the navy/black alternative because even if it’s not entirely SA, it still looks great with your Clara outfits and it’s one of the most practical jackets in Clara’s wardrobe (it’s not Nr 1, but we’ll get to that later). P.S. an Instagram filter can turn it green and I’ll be adding a photoshop edit where I turned mine green on the dress form.
