I’m not entirely sure whether to count this dress as a Jenna Coleman item or whether to count it as a Clara Oswald cosplay piece because technically, it’s both. There is a photo of Jenna which looks like it was taken on holiday in which she wears the Urban Outfitters Pins & Needles Red Floral Dress and this photo was used on the show to decorate Clara’s living room shelf as can be seen in several episodes. Sadly, I couldn’t find a better quality version of the original photo. If you have one, I would really appreciate it if you sent it to me 🙂
The dress is not something many cosplayers are after because it wasn’t actually used on the show, but since it can usually be found quite cheap, it still ended up inside the wardrobe of many cosplayers. It wasn’t actually on my list of items to get, but I told myself that if I ever saw a really cheap one, I wouldn’t let the opportunity pass me by. The usual price range for this dress on Depop is between £10 and £20, but I’ve already seen many dresses sell for less, especially if the seller wasn’t a cosplayer. I received mine from a fellow cosplayer (thank you, Katie!) for £3 after she found it in a charity shop.
Apart from being quite cheap, the dress also pops up very often. I don’t even know how many of those I saw around Depop, but it sure was a lot. If you don’t see any right now, just wait a few days and something will surely pop up. Strangely enough, this is an item you’re most likely to find on Depop. I’ve seen one on Vinted and maybe one or two on eBay, but there are times when Depop are almost spammed with them, so if you’re going for this dress, that app is probably your best shot.
Because £3 was too good an offer to pass up, I didn’t really care about the size it came in and my dress is a size M. It’s loose, but since the dress is generally very loose-fitting, I don’t mind as much. I’d say it runs true to size but due to the cut, there is definitely leeway when it comes to the sizing. You could go a size up or a size down and it wouldn’t make much of a difference.
The dress is made of 100% rayon and the label says “hand wash cold separately” and guess who only just looked at that label now after already throwing it in a 40 degrees wash. My dress survived and you’ll be fine washing it at that temperature with similar colours. It’s very light and loose. The fabric feels a bit rough, almost like crepe, but it’s smooth enough not to irritate the skin if you’re sensitive when it comes to that. The lacing on the back is a really cute idea even though I’ve seen a seller on Vinted who got a bit confused and thought the lacing belonged at the front. If you want to mix it up a bit, try wearing it that way 😀
If you get your hands on the Urban Outfitters Pins & Needles Red Floral Dress, you’ll receive an affordable, cute summer dress that will look wonderful with a pair of black tights as well. We have October now, so I doubt I’ll get the chance to wear it over the next few months, but I’m sure that this one will come in handy once the temperatures rise again.
