First of all, my Converse sneakers don’t have the hidden wedge and I don’t actually think it’s necessary for the outfit to be complete. The hidden wedge ones are quite hard to come by (I know only one cosplayer who definitely owns them, I think) and the regular ones look exactly the same and are sold basically everywhere. They can be bought all over the internet or in your local shoe shops and I’ll be reviewing the wedge-less alts in this post because I think that’s the alt most cosplayers will turn.
How I came by my shoes is actually quite a funny story. My waitress dress was already in the making and I realised I would need the shoes to complete it, so during a quiet moment at work, I started to look for the Converse shoes to go with it. I quickly realised that Converse was a rather expensive brand. However, I did spot a pair that was on sale on Amazon and went to see what kind of shop was selling them and realised it was a local one that was just around the corner from where I work. Guess where I went after work to get myself a brand new pair for £45?
An upside to buying stuff at a local shoe shop is, of course, the service and when I told the woman I was a UK 4 ½, she immediately advised against sizing up and gave me a UK4 instead. They fit me perfectly and she was kind enough to lace them properly for me.
The shoes are marvellously comfortable and the next time I’ll go to a summer convention, I know exactly which outfit I am going to wear. Add a pair of white socks and you’re good to go.
If you buy them second-hand, you can get them for as little as £10 in a decent condition. Naturally, the price goes up the newer they are and look, but if you’re planning on cosplaying Clara, especially at a convention, these shoes are a must-have because of how comfortable they are.
